Do you want to be one of the driving forces behind working towards an Aotearoa with no new HIV transmissions and where people living with and affected by HIV flourish?

Burnett Foundation Aotearoa (previously New Zealand AIDS Foundation) has been at the forefront of HIV prevention in Aotearoa for nearly 40 years.

With the same passion as those who have come before us, we’re continuing to work hard to prevent HIV transmission, reduce stigma, and maximise the wellbeing of those most affected. Through our community engagement, behaviour-change marketing campaigns, testing, and therapeutic support services, we reach people across the country.

Burnett Foundation Aotearoa offers the chance to work in a fast-paced, high-performing, and driven team that is committed to biculturalism and is an equal opportunities employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to ethnicity, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, disability, or age.

Engagement Manager

Permanent, Full time (37.5 hours per week), Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

Shape how the Burnett Foundation Aotearoa connects, listens, and shows up across communities + partners.

This is a newly shaped role, focused on moving the organisation from episodic engagement to sustained, trust-based relationships. You will lead the development of a cohesive and organisation-wide approach to stakeholder and community engagement, ensuring our engagement is intentional, mana-enhancing, culturally responsive, and aligned to our kaupapa.

Why this role matters

Our mission is to reach an Aotearoa with zero local HIV transmissions, where everyone living with or affected by HIV can flourish. By bringing structure and strategic thinking to how we engage across Aotearoa, you will contribute to our future strategy with insights from our key communities and stakeholders.

What you'll do

This is a role for someone who can facilitate strong engagement through trust and follow-through. You’ll:

  • Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships across rainbow, takatāpui, people living with HIV, migrant, and under-reached communities
  • Strengthen partnerships with sector organisations, advocacy groups, government agencies, and strategic stakeholders
  • Establish clear feedback loops and mechanisms for community input and accountability
  • Present engagement reporting, analysis, and advice to senior leaders
  • Ensure that community voice and lived experience meaningfully informs organisational decision-making

What you'll bring

You’re someone who understands that strong engagement is built on trust, consistency, listening, and follow-through. You'll bring:

  • Proven experience in stakeholder and community engagement, ideally within the public, community, health, or not-for-profit sectors
  • Exceptional relationship-building skills across diverse communities and stakeholders
  • Experience developing engagement strategies, frameworks, or systems
  • Strong communication, facilitation, and influencing skills
  • The ability to move between strategy and hands-on delivery with ease
  • High levels of initiative, adaptability, and emotional intelligence

What Matters to us

At Burnett Foundation Aotearoa, we value people who:

  • Lead with compassion, respect, and integrity
  • Understand the importance of inclusive and culturally responsive engagement
  • Are willing to engage with Te Ao Māori, tikanga Māori, and te reo Māori
  • Believe in community-led approaches and equitable outcomes

About us

For over 30 years, Burnett Foundation Aotearoa has been at the forefront of the response to HIV in Aotearoa. Today, we continue that legacy, working towards zero HIV transmissions and a future where everyone can flourish.
